Provide Robust Networking

Critical Success Factors

  1. We will consider networking as important as any utility that will be centrally administered, managed and monitored from the WAN to the wallplate.

  2. We will be proactive in network management by developing performance measures to objectively and adequately measure network robustness and unintended outages.

  3. We will implement a standards based network.

  4. We will eliminate single points of failure by utilizing redundancy.

  5. We will analyze the University’s structure to determine the correct personnel configuration to accomplish these critical success factors.

Robust Networking Projects

CSFs Projects
1,2,4 P1.

Identify and analyze causes of network failures.

  • Identify sources of information, i.e. Help Desk log, Art’s log, Building switches, etc.
  • Examine for patterns
  • Target weak elements
  • Report on findings
  • Develop proposal for addressing problems [include cost/benefit analysis, ROI]
  • Submit to management for action decision
  • Review quarterly
1,2 P2.

Develop a global picture of inventory universe/procedures for using the available inventories.

4 P3. Implement internal BGP Routing protocol.
2 P4. Add additional network monitoring and reporting.
1,5 P5. Develop 5 and 20 year network (infrastructure) plans with annual review.

5 year Components   20 year Components
Preferred components   Infrastructure
New Construction & Infrastructure   Conduit
Renovations Infrastructure   Inclusion in Master Plan
Rebuild existing out-of-std networks   Core Node Locations
    NO specific equipment
    Fiber Count?

1,4 P6.

Purchase, install, and configure new, redundant routers and switches/Provide redundant feed to each building.

  • Inventory existing equipment and fiber optic wiring
  • Perform internal design and cost analysis
  • Submit to management
  • Acquire approval and funding
  • Purchase, install, and relocate equipment
1,2 P7.

Identify departmental technicians and their network tasks.

  • Obtain contacts list.
  • Begin to work with contacts on network installation and related issues.
  • Revisit after specified period for enhancements, etc.

1

P8.

Develop preventative maintenance program for communications closet UPS batteries.

  • Inventory UPS’s in wiring closets (~400)
  • Test each unit against criteria (Is criteria developed?  If not, Step 1.)
  • Create log with pertinent info for current and future reference
  • Purchase new batteries
  • Install new batteries, log
  • Review cycles of replacements for diagnostics/cost/ROI

2

P9.

Implement environmental monitoring and control for wiring closets.

2

P10.

Develop SNMP agent to monitor network.

1,4

P11.

Implement “out-of-bounds” management at critical nodes.

3

P12.

Upgrade outdated switches and hubs with current standards-based equipment.

3

P13.

Upgrade outdated data wiring to current University standard.

  •   Identify wiring that needs to be upgraded
  • Inventory
  • Engineering
  • Itemize replacements
  • Electrical Conduit (Campus Design)
  • Initiate OTC process/request a set of as-builts
  • Incorporate results into 5 year plan (see project #5)

2

P14.

Install smart UPS in all communications closets.

1,3

P15.

Install dedicated electrical power outlets in all communications closets.

1,2,5

P16.

Station network staff in zoned areas.
